ok, now this is interesting.  I open Talkie on my computer and on my assistant's computer and it doesn't work.  However, as soon as I open it on a third computer...it works!  What's that about?

This is very strange! I presently have no theories as to what's happening, but I can think of two things to try:

1. If you have the time, here's a Talkie version with a little more verbosity in the console: If you could run it, and let me know what it reports in Console, that may shed some light on the issue

2. Try creating an ad hoc network, and using that with two computers - see if that works. If it does, there may be a device on your network (maybe the printer?) that may be interfering.

so I use the debug on all three computers? what's an ad hoc network? also, today, even though one computer was on channel 2 and one was on channel 0, both could hear me when I spoke on channel 2.

I installed debug on mine only.  when one comp was one ch 0, he could hear all transmissions.  when he moved to channel 1, he could only hear ch 1 transmissions.  Here's the console.  it shows before and after I updated to debug:

Thanks Robert - there is indeed something odd going on there; give me a day or two to ponder it, see if I can come up with a reason for why it's happening for you.

Hi again! I lie - that debug trace actually looks fine (I misinterpreted some of it an unexpected quitting of the receiver, but it must've been your changing of the channel, which causes the receiver to relaunch).

I'll wait to hear back from you about how it goes on the ad hoc network - my suspicion is that there's a clash going on with another device on the network. We'll see if I'm right or not...

tried the ad hoc network. same result. I tried to reach my assistant. both of us were on the network.  couldn't communicate.  then asked a third person to join network. now I could communicate w/my asst, but not with the third person.

I currently have no theories as to what could be happening on your network, but there are a few more things that may rule other problems in or out.

If you have the patience, I'd be interested to see the results.

So, firstly: When Talkie isn't working, in Finder's sidebar can you see the person you're unable to communicate with under "Shared" (assuming they have sharing turned on), or in iChat under Bonjour, if you're using iChat?

If you *are* using iChat, does it work between you, under circumstances when Talkie isn't working?

Alternatively, if you open up System Preferences on the other computer, and go into "Sharing", you'll see some text just underneath the "Computer Name" input that looks like: "Computers on your local network can access your computer at: Michael-Tysons-MacBook-Pro.local"

If you take that last part, which is the address (for me, "Michael-Tysons-MacBook-Pro.local"), and try to ping it from your computer, by opening up "Network Utility" from the "Utilities" folder under Applications, selecting the "Ping" tab, entering in that address and hitting the "Ping" button... What do you see? Are you getting replies? ("64 bytes from....")

Finally, are you using the software firewall ("Security" in System Preferences, "Firewall" tab)?

If we still aren't getting any helpful answers after this, I'll put together a small test application and send it over to try and diagnose what's going wrong with the network.

it seems to have been working lately.  though sometimes i have to restart the app to get it to work.

Wow, that's baffling...I wish we knew what was going on! Anyway, I'm glad it's working currently; let me know if you ever want to have another go at troubleshooting.
